Spring, 1997
The snow in Boston turned to rain and the rain didn’t stop. It was overwhelming. It was debilitating. It was enough. Chara Campanella decided that life didn’t need to be lived like that. So she packed two bags, wrote a mediocre Frasier spec, and boarded a plane to Los Angeles.
The Early Years
Two forces ruled Chara’s life: low pay and free food. All of her early jobs—customer service at a commercial post house, d-girl at a now defunct production company, writers’ PA on Dog Days and writers’ assistant on The Michael Richards Show—used the same equation. During that time, Chara ate seared ahi every chance she got.
The Reality Of It All
Eventually, Chara got the idea that it wasn’t dignified to spend her time dropping scripts onto doorsteps in the middle of the night. Reality television was a nice alternative and she spent four years writing, story editing and producing for Unsolved Mysteries, Designers’ Challenge, reDesign and House Hunters.
Keeping To The Script
Chara is currently working with Wijio Worldwide Studios, writing and producing the upcoming feature, Time Piglets. She is also writing for Disney's Handy Manny and the syndicated radio station, Jack FM.
All That Other Stuff
Chara is a member of the Producers Guild of America and on the Board of Directors of Women in Animation International. In her past lives, she was a ferryboat captain and an English as a second language teacher. She lives in Los Angeles with her husband, their five-year-old son and two-year-old daughter.
